Fifty years at it. Nobody taught him and nobody talked him out of it.
He paints, he carves, he answers the door with grace and gratitude
The running order
Four words he painted in a ring on the studio wall, one inside the next. He has gone through them in that order every morning for fifty years. Start where he starts.
Twenty two pieces on the wall. Start looking.
Crazy Uncle Frank’s
Aka The Official Online
Gallery of Studio X
Twenty two pieces, 2007 to now. Shot where they landed. On the plywood, taped to a stud, on the floor by the dog bowl. Nothing behind glass. All of it available.
Pick one out here, but you have got to come get it. Nobody has ever walked out of Studio X with the piece they came in for. They walk out with the one that got them. 701 Roeder Ave & C St, Bellingham, WA 98225
Francis enjoys giving people the tour of Studio X. It is also a prerequisite to becoming a purchasing member of Studio X.

The painting those four words came off. And what he means by them.
See. Feel.
Think. Live.
See, feel and think are the work. Live is what they add up to. Most people try to skip to the last one. That is the only thing he will argue with you about. Look at the innermost band and there is a fifth word in there, small, where only somebody standing close would find it. It says gratitude.
Two things nobody has solved. Have a go at them.
One slab of carved wood, four sides, four paintings. He shot all four and put them up together with no explanation. Called it Flipped Out. Turn it once, the face becomes a fish. Turn it again, the spiral becomes a sun. Be curious.

Finished in 2021. Signed Francusi. He hung it up and asked for a name. Nobody gave him one. Five years later it is still going by nothing, and he seems to enjoy that. Go on, take a swing.
Nobody has gone yet. You could be the one who names it.
Same door. Same dogs. Today.

Francusi Donovani
A local artist
In the year two thousand and twenty four

Nobody hands out a prize for staying true to yourself. So he made one, gave it to himself, and took the photo.
Fifty years in. Zero compromises.
Francis X. Donovan. Sculptor. Painter. A man of, by, and for the people. Charlestown kid, longshoreman’s son, who landed on the other corner of the country and stayed. He built his life around the work early and never looked back. Fifty years of mornings, one building on Roeder and C, two dogs, and a door that stays open.
He and his wife Tota drove into Bellingham on a road trip on a Friday. By Sunday morning they had put an offer on a house. They have lived in it for thirty odd years. That is more or less how he does everything.
Nobody taught him. No school for it, no apprenticeship, no waiting for permission. He worked for a living the whole way through, a travel agent in the seventies while Tota was with Pan Am, t-shirt designs and side jobs when they were needed. The art was never the fallback. It was the thing the rest of it was arranged around.
Ask him what modern primitive means and he will tell you he is pre computer. A go getter who gets done what needs doing. No software, no shortcuts, no waiting for the right conditions. Oil on canvas, oil stick, carved wood, paper, whatever is in reach and whatever the piece is asking for.
The images come from what he has seen, or what he made of what he saw, or what turns up once the painting starts telling him something back. He works to the classics. The art evolves with him and he lets it.
Studio X is where all of it happens. Twenty odd years in the same room and every inch of that building is covered. Canvases stacked in the closets, work on every wall, decades of it. The door is usually open and all sorts of people come through. Some buy something, some just look, some stay an hour. He prefers it that way. Art can be the way home, he says, and he means it about whoever walks in as much as about himself.
In his own words:
Crazy Uncle Frank. Fearlessly authentic, modern primitive and self-taught human being. Studio X, the corner art store, open most of the time, always available. Sharing and selling art for the people.
What you love in art and life interests me and my dogs Mondo and Cane, Puerto Rican farm dogs. They like new friends.
Art can be the way home. Keep gratitude on the front burner.
Best regards, Crazy Uncle Frank

Buy one piece, or buy the life’s work
Worth billions, at least.
There is no price list and no cart. Nobody buys a Donovani off a screen. Here is how it is done at Studio X, aka Crazy Uncle Frank’s Corner Art Store.
Do that and you are a member of Studio X. That is not a mailing list, it means he knows your name and you know where the door is.
One more thing. He is looking for a single collector to take the whole body of work. Four hundred and fifty six pieces, fifty years, one signature, nothing broken up and scattered. That person has not turned up yet. He is patient about it but he is serious.
He reads everything. No mailing list. No newsletter. Just Frank.
Garcia will deliver it. Via carrier pigeon, or owl. Whoever is awake.
He probably knows where it came from and how long it took. Ask him.

Free tour, any time, just give him a heads up. If the van is out front, he is in. Give the man his flowers while he can smell them.
